Citation:
Rifleman Gagan Chand was involved in fighting in the Cho La area on 1 October 1967. When the Chinese opened machine gun and recoilless gunfire, he rushed to a nearby post, picked up the light machine gun and fired on the Chinese killing five of them. He continued to fire till he was fatally wounded and fell at his post fighting to the last.

In this action, Rifleman Gagan Chand displayed courage, determination and devotion to duty.
