Citation:

On 8 June 1948 at Zojila Pass, Sepoy Gajan Singh was Bren gun No. 1. After stand down, he was away from his position when the enemy opened up heavy MMG and LMG fire on the picquet. He rushed back to the picquet position under very accurate and close fire to man his LMG and was hit in the leg. Undeterred by his wound and determined to reach his LMG, he crawled forward in full view of the enemy not caring for his personal safety.

Having got his LMG he was not satisfied with his position and crept forward to another place and was again hit in the shoulder, but managed to engage the enemy from his new position. His well-aimed fire was responsible for killing and wounding at least five enemy soldiers and temporarily slowing down the enemy attack. At this stage he was caught by an MMG burst, mortally wounding him.

Sepoy Gajan Singh displayed courage, determination and infallible spirit of an outstanding character.
