Citation:

Major Dipak Kumar Ganguli was ordered to reinforce a defended locality in the Lipa Valley and he led his men in broad daylight in spite of heavy enemy shelling. The enemy launched two severe attacks but was repulsed, suffering heavy casualties in the process. He inspired his men to fight relentlessly although his company strength was depleted. He went around the defences with complete disregard for his own safety despite the heavy enemy shelling. The enemy launched an attack in strength, forcing his company to fall back to own post.

When one of the MMG numbers was injured, he himself took charge of the MMG enabling all his men to fall back. Although he was injured, he continued to fire till all men had withdrawn. He was the last man on the post and was mortally hit while still firing the MMG.

In the action Major Ganguli displayed gallantry and leadership of a high order.
