Citation:

Captain Shashi Bhushan Ghildiyal was performing the duties of Artillery Observation Post Officer with C Company 17 Jat Regiment during an attack on "Pimple 11" in Jammu & Kashmir on 7 July 1999. The Company Commander of the assaulting company was seriously injured during the move to the objective and had to be left behind. The company second-in-command also became a fatal casualty due to the accurate and effective small arms fire of the enemy when the troops were just 400 metres short of the objective.

In this critical situation, Captain Ghildiyal, on his own, took control of the company and started directing troops. He led his men from the front and in doing so himself sustained gun shot wounds. Despite his injuries, he led his men to the objective, bringing effective artillery and mortar fire on the enemy and thwarting enemy plan to launch counter attack.

Captain Shashi Bhushan Ghildiyal exhibited leadership, bravery and raw courage in the presence of the enemy.
