Citation:

On 29 May 1948, a company of I Para Punjab was defending two ridges in J&K. The enemy launched repeated attacks at dawn on 20 May under cover of heavy MMG and mortar fire and crept up within 50 yards of the forward platoon position. Sepoy Gian Singh was No. 1 of LMG of the forward section. Enemy MMG and mortar fire was now very intense and it was impossible to expose one self without becoming a casualty.

Sepoy Gian Singh in complete disregard for his personal safety stood up and shot at the enemy from the hip, thereby inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. In spite of enemy fire, Sepoy Gian Singh kept up steady LMG fire from the hip and did not stop until he was shot through the neck by enemy MMG fire and died of his injury. He displayed remarkable devotion to duty, self-sacrifice and bravery.
