Citation:

On 8 July 1999 during "Operation Vijay", Havildar Sis Ram Gill along with his team was tasked to raid the enemy post at "Majnu", located at over 17,000 feet in high altitude. Havildar Gill led the commando team from the front and using special mountaineering equipment scaled the almost unscalable height through most difficult and rugged terrain. He reached the objective facing intense enemy artillery and mortar fire as well as small arms automatic fire. 

Though he sustained severe injury in the leg due to effective enemy fire, he continued to motivate his team and advance towards the objective. Undaunted by the injury, he himself fired sniper and LMG bursts at every opportunity resulting in killing of one officer, two JCOs and three other ranks of the enemy. He also injured four others. In spite of being grievously injured, he refused to be evacuated knowing fully well that his evacuation will lead to mission failure due to reduction of fighting strength. He continued to fight valiantly showing utmost dedication to duty, self sacrifice and ensured completion of special mission task till he finally succumbed to his injuries at 0300 hours on 9 July 1999.
