Citation:

Major Harpal Singh Grewal, officer commanding of a company of Bihar Regiment in the Eastern Sector, was given the task of liquidating a well-fortified enemy post, which was held in strength and supported by medium machine guns. During the assault, his company came under heavy small arms and machine gun fire, but this officer by his personal example inspired his men to press home the attack. While leading the attack, Major Grewal was wounded by a burst from a machine gun. He, however, continued to lead the charge and liquidated the post. After the capture of the objective he succumbed to his injuries.

In this action, Major Grewal displayed gallantry and leadership of a high order.
