Citation:

Sepoy Gurbachan Singh was the Bren gunner with a platoon of "C” Company of 1 Sikh deployed in Tithwal area of J & K. On 13 October, 1948, his platoon was rushed to reinforce "A" Company which had suffered heavy casualties as a result of continuous heavy attacks by the enemy. Sepoy Gurbachan Singh was wounded on his way to "A" Company position but he declined to stay behind and reached the "A" Company position with his platoon.

On reaching the "A" Company position, he brought his Bren gun into action under heavy enemy shelling and when most of the "A" Company bunkers had been destroyed, he kept his gun firing and was instrumental in beating off two enemy attacks. He was again hit and wounded but he stuck to his LMG and refused to be evacuated. Inspired by his courage and determination, his comrades who were in critical position, stood to their posts and put up a brave fight. In the meantime, Sepoy Gurbachan Singh got a direct hit and gave his life while manning his gun.

Sepoy Gurbachan Singh displayed courage of the highest order and in the best traditions of the Indian Army.
