Citation:

On 12, December 1947, at about 2.30 p.m. Subedar Gurcharan Singh of 1 Sikh was ordered to launch a counter-attack on the enemy who was found concentrating his forces on the left flank of the battalion and deploying them in an attempt to encircle the Indian positions in the Uri area. He dashed towards the hostile base. Being outnumbered, Subedar Gurcharan Singh withdrew to mount another offensive and though under pressure he ignored all dangers and continued to hold but had to withdraw in view of heavy casualties. On the commander's decision to pull out his forces, the responsibility of guarding the rear fell on Subedar Gurcharan who with his men bore the brunt of the enemy bravely till all our troops withdrew safely.

Subedar Gurcharan Singh displayed utmost courage, a spirit of sacrifice and sincere devotion to duty.
