Citation:

On 14 November 1947 in the operations against tribesmen at Uri in J&K, one platoon of 1 Sikh under Subedar Gurcharan Singh was ordered to capture a hill feature, most vital for the defence of Uri and also for the whole area up to Baramula. He captured the hill after about one-hour battle.

Realising the importance of the hill feature, the enemy put in a determined attack on 23 November with 2 MMGs, 6 LMGs and one mortar in support. Subedar Gurcharan Singh ordered his men to hold fire until the enemy was close to their position and he himself, in spite of very heavy enemy fire, went round from post to post throwing grenades, inspiring confidence in his men and encouraging them to stick to the last. His platoon fought magnificently and the attack was repulsed.
