Citation:

During the attack on a feature in J&K on 2 March 1948, Naik Gurdial Singh was commander of No. 2 section of the leading platoon. The route to the objective lay over a bare narrow spur in full view of the enemy in well-dug bunkers. This NCO led the head of his section. Shouting war cries and firing accurately from the hip with his sten gun, he charged a bunker and threw a grenade at it. The enemy threw back a grenade at him, shattering his right thigh completely. Although severely wounded and profusely bleeding, he refused to be carried back or attended to until the objective was captured.

Throughout this action, Naik Gurdial Singh demonstrated leadership, individual bravery and thoughtfulness of a rare variety.
