Citation:

Havildar Company group of 6/8 Gorkha Rifles was operating on a search-and destroy mission under the command of Colonel Vijay Kumar Bakshi on 2 March 1989. The company encountered militants' camp in the general area of Nayaroo lagoon in the Wanoi Sector (Sri Lanka). This contact, which initially started as an exchange of fire involving firing by the militants from multiple directions, turned into a prolonged engagement, lasting over 24 hours.

Havildar Guman Singh Gurung was the commanding officer's radio operator. Despite being seriously injured on the way he not only continued to provide communication, but also killed 3-4 militants at close range. He acted in complete disregard of his own safety and life, and set a personal example of the highest order. Finally he was fatally hit by the militants' fire at close range and died.

Throughout the operation, Havildar Guman Singh Gurung displayed conspicuous courage and valour in the face of the militants
