Citation:

On 23 July 1948 at Kazalwan, two platoons of4 Gorkha Rifles, commanded by Lieutenant Kam Lal Gurun the hostiles in overwhelming number, They were so heavily mortared that any movement was difficult and the company was without food and water. During this critical period, Lieutenant Gurung kept up the spirit of his men by maintaining personal contact with each soldier.

Ultimately on 30 July when the attack was planned Lieutenant Gurung volunteered to lead it. They slipped out of the trenches in pitch dark and surprised the enemy with an attack in fully force. The task could not have been accomplished but for the personal bravery, determination and leadership shown by Lieutenant Gurung.
