Citation:

On 12 Septemberl987, Rifleman Sanjeev Gurung, as a part of his platoon, was inducted into an important post of the Bilafondla complex of Siachen Glacier. On the night of23 September 1987, the enemy launched a determined attack on this post, preceded by heavy artillery and mortar shelling. Rifleman Gurung and his comrades put in a determined fight and beat back the enemy's attack.

Again, on the night of24 September 1987, the enemy attacked the post again. Rifleman Gurung and his comrades put up a resolute fight and beat back the enemy attack. At about 0215 hrs the enemy put in another attack on this post. In the fierce battle that ensue at one stage, Rifleman Gurung exhausted his ammunition. While he was busy filling his magazines he saw two enemy soldiers, wh had managed to climb up, advancing towards him. Keeping his cool, Rifleman Gurung picked up an empty jerrican lying next t him and hurled it at the advancing enemy soldiers. As these soldiers faltered in their advance, he charged them with his empty ri and succeeded in killing one with his rifle butt. During the encounter the enemy's other soldier shot him in the back. Rifleman Gurung was fatally injured and died soon after. His aggressiveness stopped the enemy in their tracks and broke their momentum. 

Rifleman Sanjeev Gurung displayed remarkable courage and valour and gave his life in the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
