Citation:

On 18 November 1962, the Chinese started shelling our post at Gurung Hill with heavy mortar and artillery guns. Jemadar Bahadur Gurung kept the troops of his platoon alert in their positions, and when the enemy attacked in successive waves he went from post to post, repulsing each enemy attack. The furious fight continued for about four hours during which heavy casualties were inflicted on the enemy When the officer-in-charge of the post and the forward observation officer of artillery became casualties, Jemadar Gurung took over the command and kept on fighting and repulsing the enemy. While on his round from one post to another, he was wounded in the chest by a burst of fire but continued fighting and refused to be evacuated till he succumbed to his injuries.

Jemadar Gurung displayed outstanding courage and leadership of a high order.
