Citation:

A battalion of Mahar Regiment was ordered to lay a minefield around the Fattiwala post in the Western Sector. A patrol was detailed to provide protection to the mine laying party. When mine laying started, the enemy brought down heavy artillery fire, resulting in the death of a sepoy and splinter wounds to four others. The wounded were brought back to safety by the patrol but efforts to retrieve the body of the dead soldier failed due to heavy and effective fire from enemy machine guns.

Subedar Hari Singh was ordered to take another patrol to bring back the body. As the patrol approached the area, it came under intense machine gun fire and shelling from the enemy. Subedar Hari Singh ordered his party to take cover while he himself crawled forward and recovered the body.

In this action, Subedar Hari Singh displayed courage and determination of a high order.
