Citation:

On 1 February 1948, when two platoons of a company attacked and captured a feature in J&K, Sepoy Harnam Singh was the forward most man in position and was told not to fire till he got orders. The enemy was hardly 12 yards from his position when he opened up with his own gun. The enemy spotted his position and fired at him. He got one bullet through his left shoulder but went on firing at the enemy and lulled as many as 10 to 15 of them. The enemy had penetrated in great numbers and were almost on him. Sepoy Harnam Singh stuck to his position, saying that as the enemy had lulled many of our men, he would kill as many as he could. Two enemy soldiers came at him with fixed bayonets but he managed to push them aside and from this new position, killed four of the enemy.

His presence of mind, determination and revengeful attitude made him inflict heavy casualties on the enemy This act of gallantry saved the rest of his platoon.
