Citation:

On 22 April 1948, a patrol was attacked by a superior force and was forced to withdraw about 600 yards. During this withdrawal Sepoy Nihala Ram was wounded in the leg and got left behind As soon as this was discovered, the patrol stopped and took up a covering position. Sepoy Har Narain Ram, despite the great risk involved, volunteered to bring back the wounded comrade. This brave sepoy crawled through flat opened ground for 600 yards under constant fire. He rendered first aid to the wounded and then pulled him back for more than half the distance. He could not withdraw further as the enemy, observing the movement, opened up with automatic fire. Sepoy Nihala Ram was again wounded but Sepoy Har Narain Ram refused to leave his comrade. Seeing this critical position, the patrol commander made counter attack, drove the enemy back and saved the two comrades. 

It is quite obvious that but for the gallant conduct of Sepoy Har Narain Ram, one casualty would have fallen into enemy hands. The morale, courage and spirit of sacrifice displayed by Sepoy Har Narain Ram were in the best traditions of the Indian Army.
