Citation:

Hira Lal was commanding the leading section of a platoon of 4 Kumaon engaged in clearing Bararipur Village in Kashmir in February 1948. Some 50-60 raiders had taken shelter in the village. As the leading section entered the village, it came under heavy rifle and automatic fire injuring three men, as well as Naik Hira Lal. But they had succeeded in causing three casualties among the enemy. Unmindful of his injuries Naik Hira Lal led a bayonet charge driving out the enemy He chased them and inflicted a total of twelve casualties.

Naik Hira Lai displayed a capacity for quick appreciation, determined leadership and personal bravery.
