Citation:

Subedar Hira Singh was the second-in-command of a 4 Dogra Company assigned to advance from the left flank during the attack on Barwali ridge in Naushera Sector in J&K. On 8 April 1948, when the forward platoon commander of the company was badly wounded, Subedar Hira Singh was sent to take over and carry on the advance. With utter disregard to his personal safety, he crawled forward under heavy automatic and mortar fire to reach the platoon in the shortest possible time. Reaching 100 yards short of the objective along with his platoon, he fixed his bayonet and charged the objective with a war cry "Jai Hind". The enemy threw grenades at his platoon but not caring the fierce firing, he captured the objective. He was wounded during this daring action but he continued giving directions to his platoon till he was evacuated.

Subedar Hira Singh showed exemplary courage, bravery and leadership in the capture of the objective.
