Citation:

On the night of 3 November 1948, during its advance from Machhoi to Matyan, 4 Rajput was held up by an enemy sniper and an MMG. Sepoy Jagannath Singh volunteered to neutralise them. He crossed a freezing cold nullah at two places and then, climbing to the feature from where the sniper was firing, approached the sniper from behind. He pounced on the sniper unexpectedly and captured him. The prisoner shouted and the enemy MMG fired two long bursts from approximately 200 yards behind the defile. Meanwhile, two sepoys of Jagannath Singh's section who were following him arrived at the spot. He handed over the prisoner to them and himself went towards the enemy MMG position. He threw a grenade and the enemy fled.

Throughout this action, SepoyJagannath Singh showed gallantry, courage and spirit of self-sacrifice of the highest order.
