Citation:

On 4th of June 1948 at dawn, the forward section of the enemy attacked No 2 Platoon of "A" Coy 1st Battalion of the Sikh Regiment in operations against tribesmen in Kashmir Valley. The enemy with two strong companies and with support from guns, mortars and MMGs put in a murderous and fierce assault and managed to come within 20 yards of the forward position. Sepoy Jail Singh firing his Bren from the hip and defying the enemy went forward to deal with the forward elements of the enemy While in this act he got a burst and was seriously wounded in the left thigh, but this brave and resolute Sepoy kept an advancing towards the enemy. This so disconcerted the enemy that he on Sepoy Jail Singh's front suddenly withdrew. Sepoy Jail Singh, while the enemy was retiring, got a bullet in his head, which instantly killed this gallant soldier.

This act of bravery, utter disregard for life and devotion to duty was not only an outstanding example to all ranks of the Platoon but also responsible for the final defeat of the enemy.
