Citation:

On 8 April 1948, Jemadar Janak Singh was commanding troop of 4 Dogras who were attacking a strongly held enemy position on Barvali. When the gun of one of his tanks developed trouble, he dismounted and under heavy enemy mortar fire put the gun back in action. For five continuous hours this young VCO showed the utmost coolness, courage, devotion to duty and in so doing he risked his life more than once.

On 9 April, when advancing towards Chingas, this VCO leaving only his gunner behind dismounted his whole crew and with the help of a Browning machine gun charged up a hill and captured it under enemy fire, thus enabling his squadron to get into safe harbouring area.

In the subsequent advance to Rajouri, Jemadar Janak Singh again and again dismounted from his tank under enemy fire to find the way for his tanks to get across the river Tawi.

Throughout the action, he displayed courage and fine power of leadership and great example.
