Citation:

Naik Jayaprakas S. of the Regiment of Artillery was inducted into Siachen Glacier area, and took over the duties of No 1 Gun, in addition to his duties as Battery Quartermaster Havildar. On 20 September 1987, an enemy Infantry Battalion started concentrating opposite the Bilafondla Complex in the Siachen Glacier area, with a view to launching attacks on forward-defended post.

Naik Jayaprakas, who was incharge of No 1 Gun, fired continuously "round the clock”, a total of 799 rounds. Without food, water and without caring for bodily comfort he worked from 1900 hours on 20 September 1987 onwards till about 1940 hours on 25 September 1987. A seemingly impossible task was made possible with such consummate ease only because of his tireless devotion to duty. Thanks to this gallant action, the enemy troops suffered heavy casualties and their repeated attempts to capture our post, were thwarted. However, in the process Naik Jayaprakas lost his life.
 
Naik Jayaprakas S. showed great courage and dedication throughout the operation.
