Operation: 1948 Polo - Hyderabad
Date of Award: 19 Jun 1948
Citation:
On 19 June 1948, while 4 Kumaon Battalion tactical headquarters was proceeding to a feature called Singh, on the north of river Jehlum in Kashmir, Sepoy Jodh Singh was one of the MMG operators. The MMG was carried by four coolies. All of a sudden they found themselves in an enemy ambush between two steep and densely wooded spurs. The enemy had covered every exit ground with MMGs, LMGs, rifles and 3-inch mortar fire. The enemy started inflicting heavy casualties on the TAC HO group consisting of 23 men altogether. Sepoy Jodh Singh was next to the Bren gun and its crew had been killed. Sepoy Jodh Singh rushed up to the gun and without any No. 2 Fired all the ammunition that was left, accounting for four of the enemy killed with he himself received an enemy LMG burst, hitting him in the face and right thigh.
Sepoy Jodh Singh now thought of using the MMG which was lying on the ground at a distance of about 20 yards, thrown unattended by the coolies. Sepoy Jodh Singh in spite of his forehead oozing blood in profusion and semi-paralysed leg crawled up to the MMG and was in the process of mounting it to engage the charging enemy when the enemy assaulting party put in another burst of LMG which killed him. The courage, offensive spirit, devotion to duty and determination to exterminate the enemy and the example of complete disregard for one's own personal safety displayed by Sepoy Jodh Singh are among the rare examples of gallantry.
