Citation:

On 29 May, 1948, Subedar Karam Singh was commanding a forward platoon which was defending two ridges in J & K. The first two attacks were beaten back by the stout resistance put up by the platoon under the spirited leadership of this JCO. The third time, taking advantage of a piece of dead ground, the enemy crept up within 50 yards of the platoon position. Enemy MMGs and mortars were putting down very accurate and intense fire.

Subedar Karam Singh realised that the enemy would soon try and rush his position. He resorted to shouting war cries to instill "josh" and confidence in his men who, in acts of supreme bravery, leapt out of their trenches and sangars and charged the enemy.

Subedar Karam Singh led this charge and so unnerved the enemy that they fled in disorder. It was due to his inspiring leadership, initiative and personal bravery that the platoon withstood the onslaught of the enemy three times and finally routed him by a counter-charge.
