When his company advanced to village Keri in J & K, Jemadar Karnail Singh was in command of the leading platoon. He led his platoon to the top of a spur and engaged the enemy The enemy suddenly appeared on all the features surrounding the spur and brought heavy rifle and automatic fire to bear on the platoon. Four of his men were killed, two of whom were the Bren gunners. Jemadar Karnail Singh now took over one Bren himself and engaged the enemy but was wounded twice. Though badly wounded and in great pain, he continued to fire the gun.

By now out of a total of 22 men of his platoon, six had been killed and seven, including Jemadar Karnail Singh himself, wounded. The enemy had come within 100 yards from three sides. But Jemadar Karnail Singh fought on until he was ordered by his company commander to withdraw.
