Citation:

On 25 May 1948, 1 Sikh were given the task of securing the strongly held Richmar Gali ridge near Tithwal. This feature was vital for the defence of Tithwal. The approaches to Richmar Galiwere very steep and covered with thick forest. Major Kehar Singh commanding the battalion himself conducted this attack by encircling the enemy from their left flank with one company. This move completely surprised the enemy, who fled in haste. But the enemy soon counter attacked his left flank. Major Kehar Singh rushed to the spot and himself directed the battle. The enemy attack was beaten back with heavy casualties. A Sikh company which pursued the retreating enemy met with heavy resistance. Major Kehar Singh again went to direct the attack.  

After a fierce battle the enemy retreated leaving behind many dead, and a large number of arms and ammunition. It was the inspiring leadership, great personal courage and dogged determination on the part of Major Kehar Singh that carried the day.
