Citation:

On the night of 25/26 April 1948, Captain Jagir Singh Kokri was in command of a leading company of 7 Sikh which along with another company was assigned to capture a strongly held hill feature overlooking Trehgam village. It was a vital feature for the Indian troops as it led to army's forward-most garrison at Shulur in the Kashmir Valley. Marching all night through thickjungle and under constant threat of enemy ambush, Captain Kokri attacked the enemy forward outpost the following morning and put them to flight. Leading his men from the front against heavy enemy fire, he continued to repulse the enemy counter-attacks. Both sides were fighting on a narrow ridge covered with thick forest and having a sheer drop on each side. That made the flank attack near impossible. Even the two inch mortar support was out of question. 

Taking advantage of their numerical superiority, the enemy launched a determined counter-attack but Captain Kokri led his men in a bayonet charge. The enemy fled, after a fierce fight, leaving seven of their dead behind. It was his courage and leadership that drove away the enemy and brought the entire feature under the control of Indian troops.
