Citation:

13th Battalion of the Sikh Light Infantry was assigned the mission to conduct heliborne operations on the night of 11 October 1987 and capture the university. The operations commenced as per the time schedule. Delta Company was to move in two waves of four MI-8 helicopters each after 10 Para Commando team had secured the landing zone. Only one platoon of the Delta Company was able to land since all the available helicopters were severely hit by enemy fire. Thus this platoon of the Delta Company lay deep inside enemy territory, totally isolated with Sepoy Kuldip Singh as one of its members. The link-up on foot was delayed owing to unusual enemy opposition. The beleaguered platoon with Sepoy Kuldip Singh fought valiantly till the last man and last round and set a glowing example of courage, bravery and devotion to duty. Sepoy Kuldip Singh died fighting.
