Citation:

On 24  May, 1988, a company of 11 Garhwal Rifles in which Rifleman Kuldip Singh was light machine gunner number one was tasked to search and sweep the area in jungles south of Alampil (Sri Lanka) where a huge militant hideout had been located the previous day. His section came under heavy fire from the front and right. In the initial volley of heavy fire, light machine gunner number 2 was fatally wounded. In the absence of his comrade, Rifleman Singh kept engaging the militants for quite some time. Finding a few more of his colleagues injured and lying around him, he realised the gravity of the situation and in spite of intense volume of militants fire, Rifleman Singh lifted his comrade on his back and helped another colleague to evacuate to his platoon headquarters.

He came back to his position and found that militants fire had become more intense from his right. He immediately changed position and started engaging the militants' position. Rifleman Singh fought the militants fiercely and could be easily singled out by his adversaries. Ultimately he became the target of their burst fire, which pierced his head. Rifleman Singh tenaciously held his position till he was killed. Rifleman Kuldip Singh displayed conspicuous courage and valour in action against the militants.
