Citation:

On 6 September 1965, Naik Kunwar Singh was commanding a rifle section of his company, which was assaulting an enemy position in the Lahore Sector. When two soldiers manning the LMG of his section were seriously wounded by heavy and intensive enemy mortar and machine gun fire, he quickly took over the LMG and, although himself injured by mortar splinters, inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy. He silenced one enemy machine gun post. Despite his wound, he continued firing effectively and thus enabled his platoon to get to the objective. Suddenly, an enemy mortar bomb burst knocked out his LMG and blew off both his hands. Undeterred, he continued encouraging his men till the objective was captured. Throughout, Naik Kunwar Singh displayed supreme courage, initiative and determination of a high order.
