Area Left Shoulder in the Siachen Glacier area at an altitude of 21,000 feet was occupied by the adversary's forces. The position dominated our posts and made our defences untenable. They had, therefore, to be evicted. On the night of 24 June 1987, an assault force negotiated the ice wall with the help of ropes and reached a spot, barely 200 metres from the top of Left Shoulder. The assault force was then divided into two teams; Rifleman Lachman Dass was a member of the team led by Subedar Bana Singh. The team could not advance further as their weapons failed to fire due to extreme cold conditions. 

On 26 June 1987, as the team tried to advance further, it came under heavy artillery and small arms fire of the adversary. Rifleman Lachman Dass was ordered to move stealthily towards the adversary's bunker. At grave risk to his life, this valiant soldier crawled up to the bunker in broad daylight and under intense artillery and small arms fire, lobbed grenades from close quarters through a hole in the bunker, thus destroying the adversary's troops inside. This enabled the remaining members of his team to close onto the objective and capture the bunker. 

In this action, Rifleman Lachman Dass displayed valour and courage of an extremely high order.
