Citation:
Sepoy Pundalik Mahar was No. 1 of MMG at picquet number seven at Naushera sector in J & K. On 6 February 1948, the picquet was attacked by the enemy in overwhelming strength and in mass formations. Sepoy Pundalik Mahar opened fire at the enemy at point blank range. He continued firing for about one and a half-hour till he was wounded in the neck. With sustained and determined effort, he inflicted nearly 500 casualties on the enemy.
Sepoy Pundalik Mahar displayed skill, courage, determination and presence of mind in the discharge of his duty. On 31 May 1989, Naik Mahavir Singh, a radio operator of 7 Battalion Rajputana Rifles inducted into Sri Lanka, was entrusted with the task of establishing a block along with five other personnel to prevent militants from escaping. His group was fired at by the militants who were attempting to escape. The Non Commissioned Officer reacted instantly and returned fire. He then gave immediate chase along with the platoon commander to prevent the militants from escaping. Both the Non Commissioned Officer and his platoon commander were hit and injured. In spite of being injured in his chest, Naik Mahavir Singh continued to crawl forward to close on and locate the militants, who had holed up in the bush. Having located the militants, the Non Commissioned Officer engaged them with his carbine, killing both the militants, holed up there. This led to the recovery of two AK 47 rifles. However, Naik Mahavir Singh succumbed to his injuries while being evacuated. Naik Mahavir Singh displayed conspicuous courage, initiative and valour in action against the militants and died in the best tradition of the Army.
