Citation:
On the night of 10 September 1965, Major Shamsher Singh Manhas was leading a company in the assault on Burki Village, which was defended by concrete pillboxes and with MMG and artillery fire. Halfway to the objective, the company came under heavy enemy artillery and MMG fire. Undeterred by heavy casualties and an enemy bullet through his thigh, he led the assault alo0ng the road axis with great determination and destroyed two pillboxes with rocket launchers and ultimately captured the village. 

In this action, Major Manhas displayed courage, determination and resourcefulness of a high order.
