Gazette Notification: 35 Pres/88, 22-1-88
Operation: 1987 Pawan Sri Lanka
Date of Award: 21 Oct 1987
Citation:
Rajaseb Babu Maniyar was Light Machine Gun No. 1 of the rear platoon of B Company of 6 Guards Mech deployed in Sri Lanka as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force. On 21 October 1987, the company was ordered to join the Brigade Headquarters location at North Kepai by capturing all enemy positions en route. The company had to pass through a militant infested area along a heavily mined road. It had some wheeled vehicles and so had to move by road. The company had hardly progressed 200 yards, when the forward elements came under heavy firing. The Company Commander ordered the rear platoon to attack from the flank so as to relieve pressure on the leading platoon. The Platoon Commander tasked Guardsman Maniyar to cover the platoon's move.
While doing so, Guardsman Maniyar soon came under effective fire of the militants. While changing to an alternative fire position, he sustained a bullet injury in the abdomen but he continued to cover the move of his platoon without caring about his injury. He noticed that the militants have opened another position within grenade throwing range. He lobbed a grenade and silenced that position. However, he had lost a lot of blood and finally succumbed to his injuries. Guardsman Maniyar's action not only saved the lives of his company, but also helped to relieve pressure on the forward platoon.
Guardsman Rajaseb Babu Maniyar demonstrated exemplary valour and devotion to duty of the highest order.
