Second Lieutenant Satish Kumar Prabhakaran Menon of the 15th Battalion, the Mechanised Infantry Regiment was deployed in the Jaffna Fort as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force with his platoon of BMPs along with 1 Maratha Light Infantry. On 10 October 1987, Commander 41 Infantry Brigade, who was leading the advance of the Brigade with a view to establishing link up with Jaffna Fort, had got pinned down along with two companies of 5 Rajputana Rifles and was surrounded by the militants. The 5 Rajputana Rifles personnel had expended all the ammunition and there were no means to effect supplies. The only way to rescue the Commander and provide ammunition to the 5 Rajputana Rifles personnel was by establishing a link up with the Jaffna Fort. When the Commanding Officer of his unit allotted this task to Second Lieutenant Menon, he accepted it as a challenge. The young officer moved out of the Fort with his BMPs platoon with great confidence, courage and determination and traversed two kilometers by destroying a number of militants' bunkers and Medium Machine Gun positions. He succeeded in retrieving the Brigadier and supplying ammunition to the companies of 5 Rajputana Rifles and later under the covering fire of the BMPs moved them into the Jaffna Fort. 

Thus Second Lieutenant Satish Kumar Prabhakaran Menon displayed conspicuous courage at great peril to his life.
