During the attack on Pir Thil Nakka on 17 March 1948, Lance Naik Naurang Singh was commanding a section of the left forward platoon. A Browning and some riflemen were active on his front and the going was particularly difficult. He ordered the whole of his section to throw a grenade each and then he led an assault through an inferno of fire capturing the enemy post in a fast dash. He then pressed on to an enemy position in the rear, which was still active, completely overrunning it without any loss to his men. At this stage another enemy post on the flank was spotted. After firing some rifle grenades at the post, he closed with it and destroyed it. By these isolated individual actions on his own initiative, he gained for his company very advantageous ground, which was responsible for routing the well-entrenched enemy in that sector. Throughout the action, he did not consider his own safety for a minute and exhibited fearless dash which made his men follow him cheerfully through very tough action.
