Citation:

On 16 December 1971, a battalion of Garhwal Rifles was ordered to raid enemy localities in the Western Sector. During the move to the objective, while the battalion was passing through a minefield, two anti-personnel mines were actuated which alerted the enemy who brought down heavy volume of artillery and small arms fire on our troops.

Lance Naik Gabar Singh Negi was with the leading raiding force when an enemy MMG opened up from a bunker 100 yards away Along with one other rank he crawled towards the enemy bunker, lobbed a grenade into it and charged the post. He killed two of the enemy gun crew and brought back the captured machine gun.

In this action, Lance Naik Negi displayed gallantry, determination and devotion to duty of a high order
