Citation:

On 19 May 1948, Captain Tirath Singh Oberoi was ordered to take out a patrol towards feature in J&K to pinpoint enemy defence positions in that area so that our artillery could engage them. His forward section, on arrival at the ridge, came under heavy MMG fire. On hearing this firing, Captain Oberoi rushed forward with the platoon and counter-charged the enemy. Under his inspiring leadership, his men completely routed the enemy. The enemy was by this time gathering and increasing in numbers. Captain Oberoi decided to shell enemy position. Two direct hits were scored on enemy bunkers. 

Later, in the hand-to-hand fight, one of our sepoys was severely wounded. Captain Oberoi personally bandaged him and arranged his evacuation competently from the enemy bullet-swept area and brought back the whole patrol without any mishap. 

Captain Oberoi displayed remarkable leadership and bravery. His conduct throughout this operation was cool and confident and, therefore, inspiring.
