Citation:

Lance Naik Jaman Singh Patagi and Rifleman Sangram Singh Rawat were the leading scouts of a platoon of 3 Garhwal Rifles during their advance to an objective in J&K. On 14 July 1948, when they neared the objective, they came across enemy mines and booby traps. Lance Naik Patagi and Rifleman Rawat, realising the danger of delay, rushed forward through the mined area and blew up a number of them but while thus clearing the way they themselves were blown up.

Their action gave an opportunity for the unit to move forward through the gap made in the minefield and to capture the objective. Lance Naik J.S. Patagi and Rifleman G.S. Rawat made the supreme sacrifice in devotion to duty.
