On 31 August 1989, on receipt of information of militant presence near village Mawathipuram, Jaffna, Sri Lanka, two squads under Major Sheonan Singh, in three vehicles moved on a search-and-destroy, mission, using the road Palali- Kankesanthurai-Tellipallai. While passing through the village Mawathipuram on the Kankesanthurai-Tellipallai road, the assault squad came under intense enemy fire simultaneously from five houses, alongside the road. The driver of the vehicle in which Paratrooper Pawan Kumar was travelling was hit by a bullet, and the vehicle came to a halt in the ambush site. The militants began throwing grenades at the vehicle.
Paratrooper Pawan Kumar received splinter injuries in head and chest, but took cover behind the ambushed vehicle, and fired. Of the eight soldiers in the vehicle, four were killed and three were seriously injured. But undaunted, Paratrooper Pawan Kumar continued firing and kept the militants at bay. Suddenly he noticed a militant who had taken up a position behind a wall, and was firing at his colleagues trapped in the ambushed vehicle. With total disregard to his personal safety, he crept towards the wall, struck the militant with his weapon, snatched his weapon away and so prevented further casualties. The militants withdrew though they were numerically far superior.
Paratrooper Pawan Kumar displayed steadfastness, courage and tenacity of an exceptional order in spite of being wounded.
