Citation:

Naik Prem Chand was commanding a section of 10 Platoon of "B" Company which was operating in area Spring feature in J & K. On 15 October 1948, the platoon was ordered to cover the advance and subsequent assault on the feature by "B" Company Having successfully completed its role, the Company was asked to fall back with No. 10 Platoon last to withdraw. While in the process of withdrawal, the enemy counter-attacked and two of the men of Naik Prem Chand's section fell wounded. He ordered his section to take position and himself dashed forward to rescue the wounded comrades. He first brought one man to safety and then went to recover the second casualty. By then the enemy had intensified its fire and were trying to capture the wounded man. But Naik Prem Chand was not to be scared of the firing and undaunted he reached the wounded man. He was hit by a bullet in the shoulder but he lifted the wounded man on his shoulder and rushed back to safety. The man however succumbed to his wounds. 

Naik Prem Chand set an example the parallel of which is not frequently heard. His cool courage, sacrifice for his comrades, leadership and bravery was in the highest traditions of the Indian Army
