A Forward post of 19 Garhwal Rifles deployed, as HAA LC was vulnerable and dominated by enemy observation and fire. Lance Naik (Washerman) Prem Pal, though a tradesman, volunteered to serve at the difficult picquet. On 27th July 1998 a neighbouring post came under heavy fire from three enemy posts. To relieve pressure on the neighbouring post, the picquet of Lance Naik Prem Pal returned fire. As the ammunition of automatic grenade launcher was depleting, Lance Naik Prem Pal volunteered to replenish it. Under withering enemy artillery fire, he moved out to replenish ammunition and was hit by a splinter in the thigh. After first aid, he again moved to replenish ammunition.

At about 1345 hrs the kerosene barrels in the post were hit by a shell due to which a fire started and soon began spreading towards

ammunition bunkers. Preempting impending danger, Lance Naik Prem Pal ran out in the open to extinguish the fire. In doing so, he received a machine gun bullet near right shoulder. Undeterred, he carried on and was able to assist in putting off the fire. While crawling back to his shelter, he was hit directly by an artillery shell killing him instantaneously. This action of his saved the post and lives of his comrades. Lance Naik (Washerman) Prem Pal exhibited unparallel sense of commitment, exceptional presence of mind, selfless devotion to duty and supreme example of gallantry above and beyond the call of duty.
