On 13 October 1948, Sepoy Shangara Singh was sent as one of the stretcher bearers with the unit medical officer to evacuate casualties from the forward most company which had come under heavy enemy firing in the Tithwal area of J & K. It was a very steep climb and the enemy was heavily shelling the only track leading to the company position. But young Sepoy Shangara Singh managed to reach the company position. He dug up the casualties buried under the collapsed bunkers and brought them the medical officer. He moved from trench to trench without any cover and continuously exposing himself to firing. At one time, he himself was half buried under a bunker and also received a direct hit. But he not only got himself out but also rescued the other three comrades buried in the bunker. Sepoy Shangara Singh displayed remarkable courage and determination in the performance of his duties and getting his comrades timely medical aid.
