Citation:

On the night of 27/28 November 1998, when an assault group negotiated a steep cliff near the line of control in Uri sector in Jammu and Kashmir, the enemy brought down intense and accurate automatic fire on the group.

Making a skillful use of field craft and with utter disregard to his personal safety, Naib Subedar Rampal Singh deployed himself approximately 150 metres from the enemy post to return the fire. By this act he succeeded in drawing enemy fire towards him thereby enabling other members of the assault group to deploy effectively.

During the raid he led one of the assault teams, which was tasked to destroy an enemy bunker. Undeterred by accurate enemy fire, he continued to lead the advance towards the enemy post, motivating other members of the assault team to effectively deliver the charge. Enroute he had a fall resulting in a deep cut on his scalp. However, disregarding his injury he shattered enemy morale who fled from their post, thereby enabling own assault group to physically secure and thoroughly destroy the post.

Naib Subedar Rampal Singh, thus, showed daring audacious fighting spirit and personal bravery in the face of intense enemy fire
