Subedar Bhagwan Singh Rana doing the duties of Platoon Commander of 'A' Coy, 5/1 G R showed exemplary courage. The JCO was wounded on 20 October 1987, during action but refused to be evacuated. He again showed courage and qualities of good leadership on 8 November 1987, while leading the advance to Mani pay ahead of his platoon to assault and neutralise enemy firing positions time and again.
He did not care for his personal safety when confronted with accurate enemy fire despite the fact that the fire was effective and causing casualties around him. At Chutumalai, he neutralised the enemy position along with a small body of troops. Again on 9 November 1987, while leading his platoon from house to house, clearing the enemy positions, the platoon was held up by the enemy automatic fire from the flank. But Subedar Rana was not deterred, and he personally led the men to charge the position. Despite being badly wounded in the hand by the enemy's bullets, he continued with the charge and neutralised the position till he lay unconscious.
