Citation:

On 26 June 1948, Lance Naik Thaman Singh Rana was ordered to occupy, along with his section, a certain feature in order to provide depth and give covering fire to a defensive position which had been attacked by some 300 strong enemy troops. The defensive position located along Dumkhar River in the Ladakh Valley was eight miles long and Lance Naik Rana was to provide depth to the position as a whole. Though he had just returned from a forward position, he immediately complied with the instructions and reached the new position within two hours. He gave continuous support to the forward troops who were to withdraw Despite lack of food and extreme shortage of ammunition, he held on with his section until he was practically surrounded by the enemy and cut off from his base. However, after dark, he skillfully withdrew from the position and returned to his platoon headquarters. 

Lance Naik Thaman Singh Rana, with his bold and determined action saved the remainder force from being annihilated and enabled them to withdraw and occupy another defensive position in the rear.
