Operation: 1948 Polo - Hyderabad

Citation:

At Machhoi in Jammu and Kashmir, on 23 May 1948 while attacking a feature, Lance Naik Sajan Singh was in command of a forward section platoon. During the assault his section was subjected to particularly heavy fire from enemy 2-inch mortars and grenades, killing two of his men and temporarily halting his section. He went from one man to the other, cheering and directing them, taking no notice whatever of the intense fire all round him, filling his men with complete confidence and air of superiority. From here with himself leading, he blitzed the enemy position and was responsible for killing two enemy soldiers with his sten gun and grenade throwing. All through the action by his utter fearlessness and disregard for his personal safety, he made the men willingly go through a terribly tough and dangerous time and was always in complete control of the situation.

This NCO exhibited leadership, courage and vigorous dash, which commanded spontaneous respect from his men.
