Citation:

On 21 November 1947, the enemy ambushed a convoy consisting of the transport and administrative block of 4 Kumaon along the Uri-Poonch road in Kashmir. Lance Havildar Sardar Singh was travelling in the second vehicle which was heavily sprayed with automatic and rifle fire by enemy. He immediately got down and ordered this section to take position along the road with the platoon escorting the convoy. While getting down, he was wounded by an enemy bullet in the left leg.

Though wounded, Lance Havildar Sardar Singh continued to hold the position. When requested to retire to safety and receive first aid, he refused. Instead he commanded his men to hold the position to the last man. Immediately, the enemy about 200 strong and under cover of supporting fire from either side stormed the defensive position held by the platoon. Lance Havildar Sardar Singh, not understanding the danger, did not budge an inch and with unflinching courage challenged the advancing enemy.

Though disabled, he advanced limping and firing with his sten from the hip. The shadow of tragedy had by now enveloped this brave soldier who had been continuously losing blood from the wound in his leg. His last cry was 'Hindustan Zindabad".

This NCO's behaviour on the field was stimulant to the morale of his platoon and an example of great bravery and sacrifice.
